Thanx Steve for the VC-MP3s, and Drumhead for the freehand tech-vid. I was wondering how that was done! Kinda similar to Weckl's Ins. video where he hits his brushes on the rim then lets the brushes bounce in a 'flutter'.

It's a great day in cyberspace!

Hey guys ... you too can have fun playing with pianist Alan Pasqua (and the great bassist Dave Carpenter) on the Play-Along CD that accompanies "Drumset Essentials, Volume 2" by yours truly. There are also a couple of great big band tracks on that CD (in both listen-only and play-along versions). The book is published by Alfred Music ... Volume 1 has a play-along CD, too, though I think the Vol. 2 one is really cool.

Just finished Volume 3, and THAT play=along CD is really wild. Kudos to Alan Pasqua (who I've known since college days at Indiana University/1971 ...!); hey, while you're at it, check out the latest 2 trio recordings we've made, "Badlands" and "Live at Rocco," both on the Fuzzy Music label.

    End of advertisement.

    All the best,
    Peter Erskine

    Mr. Erskine:
While I've got ya on the board.....
You mentioned awhile ago Jaco's "Florida Beat"
Could you elaborate on that beat a bit, and where we could hear examples of it?

I'm listening to Weather Report 8:30.... very hip..

    Dave,

Thanks for your post (you, too, Me2).
I guess that you could characterize Jaco's "Florida" drumbeat as being a combination of r&b and Caribbean musics ... think Bernard "Pretty" Purdie mixed in with calypso, plus a dash of Tony Williams, and that pretty much seems to add up to Jaco's drumming style ... check out his playing on "8:30" (the title track, which was an improvisation by Jaco on drums and Joe Zawinul on keyboards), and "Teen Town" on the "Heavy Weather" album ... also, you can hear some of Jaco's drumming on his "Word of Mouth" album (particularly on the title track).

Jaco was a big fan, too, of the drumming of Allyn Robinson, who was playing drums with Wayne Cochran and the C.C. Riders when Jaco was that band's bass player.

    Jaco was one incredible musician.

    Have a great day, y'all.
